Printer Not Working? Common Printer Problems and Solutions
When the printer is not working, everything grinds to a halt. Thankfully, Windows 7 does not have a lot of printer problems, and the ones it does have are relatively easy to fix. If your printer is not working properly, read through the following to fix your printer fast.
Problem with the Cords
- Power Cord - All printers will need to be plugged into a power source. Many times this means the printer will have two cables, one to the computer and another to the power supply. The power supply cable is also broken into two parts. Carefully check the connections to the plug, the printer, and the midpoint in the power cable. It is the midpoint that often comes loose, causing the printer to stop working.
- Printer Cable - In most cases, this is a USB cable that connects your printer to your computer. Older printers may have a parallel cable and newer printers can come with firewire cables. In any case, check the cable to make sure it is snugly plugged in.
Problems with Paper
Where you have printers, you will have paper problems. Some of the common issues are paper jams and not grabbing the paper. Paper jams are explanatory and easy to fix.
When your printer is not grabbing the paper, check the plastic "grabbers" for dust. In most cases, some tweezers will remove debris from the wheels, allowing your printer to grab the paper again.
Problems while Printing
- Random Characters - If you are getting "funny" marks on your paper, then chances are you just need to clean the printer cartridges. Navigate your printer properties to the clean cartridges.
- White Lines in Printing - Again, this is normally a cleaning issue. Clean the cartridges to fix the issue.
Printer Features Not Working
When your printer features are not functioning correctly, it is either a problem with the registry or a problem with the drivers. In most cases, reinstalling the drivers will solve the problem.
Other causes could be outdated printer drivers. If this is the case, then reinstalling the drivers will not help. You will need to track down and install the latest drivers to get your computer or printer up and running again.
Updating your printer drivers manually is done through your printer's website. For example, if you're using a Canon printer, then you go to Canon dot com. Every hardware manufacturer has a driver downloads section for its products.
Alternatively, you can update your drivers with driver update software. The software will not only find your printer drivers, but it will locate any other driver needing updating as well (like your USB ports). At that point, you download and install the drivers for better performance.
Windows 7 makes installing printers so easy that most people will only need to plug in the printer and select add a printer. However, there are some problems that will need to be solved manually. Hopefully, this guide has helped you get your printer working again.

How do you know when your printer cable doesn't work?
I connect my usb cable and I don't see the (new hardware detected) I do see it with other things I connect though.
install the printer software with the help of CD that came with the printer...when you bought it...
until and unless it wont detect the printer...and you will get the same error....
