The feature packed Oki C3600
A colour laser printer is the ideal answer for home offices that print a high amount of coloured docs. Competitively priced about £270, the Oki C3600 is network ready and prints at a striking speed in comparison with its competitors, however it is larger compared to the majority of printers and even does not have cool features say a full-colour LCD screen or even a wireless print server.
We are not to satisfied with the C3600's style and design, but we have never been too taken with laser printers generally speaking. The flat white C3600 measures 371 x 290 x 478mm and weighs around 46lbs. We would'nt call it a behemoth, but it's much larger compared to the Samsung CLP315W, which only measures 389 x 244 x 312mm. The C3600 even weighs around 9kg more compared to the CLP-315W, and so those with limited desk space will most likely be more happy with a smaller device.
All the ports needed to connect the printer to your computer is placed at the back of the chassis, which includes a USB and an Ethernet port for networking around multiple systems. Another beneficial feature missing on the C3600 is a front mounted USB port allowing you to connect PictBridge- compatible cameras as well as direct printing from your USB flash disk.
Given that it's only a single function laser printer, there aren't many additional features, on the contrary we commend Oki for making use of a 400MHz processor along with a hefty 128mb of memory, which enables the C3600 to deal with even bigger print jobs compared to its competitors. The memory is even upgradable up to 640MB.
The C3600's cyan, magenta, yellow and black OKI toner cartridges} are individually separated and lined-up in a horizontal row underneath the top cover. This printer ships with 'standard' capacity cartridges. Based upon the claims from Oki, the black cartridge will last for 1,500 pages while each of the three colour cartridges lasts for 1,000 prints. A replacement black cartridge costs around £35, while replacement for the colour cartridges cost approximately £55. You can also purchase high-capacity cartridges from Oki that could print 2,500 black pages (around £50) or 2,500 colour pages (around £70). There are also available toner cartridges that is compatible with OKI C3600 at 30% saving. The recommended monthly work cycle for this particular printer is 35000 pages, which is certainly more than enough for small businesses.
The C3600 fared very well in a direct output speed assessment with 3 other colour laser printers. It came second best in all our tests, just a bit behind from the Brother Hl4040CN, also a single-function printer with a similar price. The black text were printed at almost the same speed as the HL -4040CN, generating 15.61 pages per minute, in contrast to the HL-4040CN's 15.66. It could not match the Samsung CLP-315W in the colour presentation test, but with this printer, I'm pretty sure that you won't be waiting too long for any document to be printed.
The performance of the C3600 in all our print-quality test looked very promising. Black text appeared just like we expect to have with a laser printer, with bold line formation with smooth gradation along font size scales. The C3600 also managed our text graphics very well, displaying exceptional signs of colour separation as well as well-defined image differentiation, even in some of the refined blending detail. As expected, some of the images appeared a little smudgy and pixellated, however the general print quality across presentations, graphics and simple text strengthened our general impression of this printer.
The Oki C3600 is rather large and weighty, and does not present an array of features. However it does deliver high-quality prints at a quick rate, which makes it one of our favourite colour laser printers.
