Tattoo Ink - What Lasers get rid of what colors?
Ink manufacturers are not required to reveal the contents of their products. Nor do they require US FDA approval. Most inks (they are really pigments) are mixed with various carrier solutions to disinfect the pigment and ensure even mixture during application.
The following carriers are considered to be the safest: ethanol (drinking alcohol), purified water, Witch Hazel, Listerine , Propylene Gylcol and Glycerine (glycerol).
Some of the substances used in tattoo inks may produce toxicity. Modern inks often include metal salts (metals that are oxidized to create a color), industrial organic compounds, petroleum compounds, acids and vegetable dyes. The ink pigments most commonly reported to cause a reaction are reds and yellows. Surprisingly these are the two that most often disappear from a tattoo without any signs of reaction.
Plastics are now used in tattoo inks and are known for their bright coloring. However many people have shown sensitivity to them. Glowing pigments or those that response to black UV light are also known to be risky - some may be safe, but others contain phosphors or are radioactive.
This list includes the various colors of pigments used and the laser technology that is best suited to removing them
Black: this is considered one of the easiest ink colors to remove. This is because most black inks absorb the entire light spectrum. All types of Q-switched lasers seem effective at removing them, these include the Ruby (QSRL), Alexandrite, Nd:YAG-Invisible and the Nd:YAG-Green light.
Brown: these are often made with ochre which is made from iron (ferric) oxides often combined with clay. Tan inks often absorb laser light below 560 nanometers and flesh-colored pigment absorb below 535 nm.
Red: This color is often reported to cause reactions, possibly because it is often made with rust (iron oxide). Laser wavelengths below 575 nm are most effective for removing red inks.
Orange: These pigments are often made with organic industrial pigments such as: disazodiarylide or cadmium seleno-sulfide. Orange pigments typically absorb green laser light below 560 nm.
Yellow: Probably the hardest pigment to make and the ingredients vary widelyYellows are sometimes known to cause reactions; this is possibly due to the fact that more pigment is required to make them. Yellows usually absorb laser light below 520 nm but will often begin reflecting above this level. Yellows are one of the most difficult pigments to eliminate.
Green: Are one of the more difficult inks colors to remove or fade since they will only absorb the light of their complement- red. Q switched Ruby lasers are often used for removing greens. Wavelengths of 625-755 nm are the most effective for greens.
Blue: are often as resistant as greens to remove since they will only absorb red light. Q switched Ruby lasers are often used for removing blues. Wavelengths of 625-755 nm are the most effective.
Violet: is often made of manganese violet (manganese ammonium pyrophosphate) is known to be moderately toxic if ingested and highly toxic if inhaled in the raw form. Some of the purples, especially the bright magentas, are photoreactive and will tend to lose their intensity after prolonged sunlight exposure. Violet is similar to red in its laser light reflectance and absorption properties, so green light in wavelengths below 575 nm are most often effective for removing them.
White: These colors often consist of lead white (lead carbonate) and titanium dioxide (considered quite safe and is widely used in paints, sunscreens and food coloring). Most ingredients commonly used in this pigment color are considered non toxic.

how can i make invisible ink that reveals under a UV light?
i have a sonic screwdriver from Doctor Who and it came with an invisible ink thing since the light is UV. it seems like the ink dried out or ran out or something and i was wondering if i could make more ink that would work with the light. i remember something from when i was a little kid about making invisible ink, but i think it was heat sensitive and didn't react to UV. surprisingly, i can't find much about this through google, so i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.
the heat sensitive "invisible ink" was just lemon juice as I remember.
There are places to purchase UV ink, but I don't know that you could make it.

Other things that react to black lights would be liquid laundry detergent (especially the kind that "whitens whites") and petroleum jelly. You could try 'painting' with those.
